Corporate Strategy and Business Development

In April 2009, CXC was restructured into three functional areas: Corporate Services, Examinations Services and Business Services. Business Services – designated Corporate Strategy and Business Development (CSBD) – was established for the purpose of providing focus in the areas of strategic planning, business development, and marketing.

Business Development

The business development focus is aimed at
(i) leveraging CXC’s intellectual property rights;
(ii) developing new products and services; and
(iii) fundraising.

Below are highlights of recent activities:

Ian Randle Publishers

CXC has partnered with Ian Randle Publishers for the production of CSEC and CAPE syllabuses and past papers.

CXC signed a contract with Nelson Thornes Publishers for the production of CCSLC resource materials, and the redesign and repackaging of the existing CSEC and CAPE Study Guides.

Currently, less than half of all secondary school students in the region complete five or more CSEC subjects (the standard for entry-level employment and for matriculation into tertiary education). This situation has necessitated that CXC explore the development of an Open School. This is being explored with the Commonwealth of Learning and NotesMaster, an existing free learning platform.

CXC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Pearson Education and its subsidiary Edexcel towards strengthening the vocational education offerings within the region. Edexcel offers the BTEC vocational qualifications which cut across a number of key employment sectors and which are supported by essential skills for employment and digital applications.

Marketing

CSBD is responsible for marketing the CXC brand. To this end, opportunities for a partnership with established suppliers to provide bulk corporate memorabilia (including shirts, bags, caps, key rings and pens) for marketing and promotional purposes are being explored.

As part of its brand awareness drive, CXC will be launching a schools’ yearbook project. It is intended that the CXC-branded yearbook will be stylised for all schools in all territories to record, highlight, and commemorate the past school year.

Corporate Strategy/Strategic Planning

With the expiration of the current Strategic Plan in 2010, preparation of the 2011 – 2015 Plan has commenced. CXC has embarked on a process of stakeholder engagement which is expected to engage key stakeholders including member governments, students, education institutions, principals, teachers, and parents.

Other

The CSBD is leading on the construction of the permanent Headquarters building for CXC. The directorate also leads on CXC’s involvement in CARICOM agency matters including the establishment of a regional accreditation agency, a regional mechanism to arbitrate staff disputes; the pursuit of greater consistency of privileges and immunities for CARICOM agencies; and the coordination of a human resources strategy for staff in these agencies.
