The Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Visual Arts programme comprises eleven components: ten Production Options and a component called Theory of Art. The ten Production Options span all the major ways that Visual artists normally express themselves such as Drawing, Graphic Design, Fibre Arts, Leathercraft, Ceramics and Printmaking.
The CSEC syllabus in Visual Arts is designed to enable students to study a Visual Arts programme that reflects their special abilities and skills, interests, and career goal. Hence, candidates are required to select any three of the eleven components to construct the programme that is of most worth to them.
If one of the three components selected is Theory of Art (with its emphasis on research and inquiry), the candidate is said to be registered for the Syllabus A. If the component, Theory of Art, is not one of the selected components, then the candidate is said to be registered for the Syllabus B. All candidates, whether they are registered for Syllabus A or Syllabus B, are examined on each of the ten Production Options in the same way.
Each Production Option consists of an external examination and internal examination (called School-Based-Assessment or SBA). The Art teacher in each school is responsible for the internal assessment (SBA) and marks the pieces completed by candidates. A sample of these artworks is submitted to CXC for moderation purposes. These samples are re-assessed by CXC Examiners.
In order to provide information and guidance to teachers on how to critique students’ work prior to awarding a final grade to such pieces, the Council has selected exemplars of past students’ artwork for display on this Web site. One of the Council’s Examiners for Visual Arts provides information on the processes that should be completed by candidates prior to creating each piece of artwork. Included also is an explanation of what the examiners look for in order to award a final grade for each piece of artwork submitted to the Council.
