Students from Trinidad and Tobago, won eight of the nine Regional Top Awards for outstanding performance in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) for 2012.

Melissa Persad of St Joseph’s Convent (St Joseph) received the Dennis Irvine Award, the symbol of academic excellence at CAPE and the prize for the Most Outstanding Candidate Overall in the region in CAPE.

Melissa’s performance ended the two-year dominance of top CAPE award by students of Presentation College, San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago.

Melissa achieved Grade I in 12 Units with all A’s on the Module grades. She achieved Grade I in Applied Mathematics Units 1 and 2, Biology Units 1 and 2, Caribbean Studies, Chemistry Units 1 and 2, Communication Studies, Physics Units 1 and 2 and Pure Mathematics Units 1 and 2.

Another student from St Joseph’s Convent, St Joseph, Victoria Bharat, copped the award for Most the Outstanding Candidate in Business Studies. Victoria achieved Grade I in seven Units – Accounting Units 1 and 2, Caribbean Studies, Economics Units 1 and 2, and Management of Business Units 1 and 2, and Grade II in Communication Studies.

Victoria’s performance also ended the dominance of Lakshmi Girls’ Hindu School, which has won this award for the last four years.

Matthew Rahamut of St Benedict’s College won the award for the Most Outstanding Candidate in Environmental Science. Matthew achieved Grade I in Biology Units 1 and 2, Caribbean Studies, Communication Studies, Environmental Science Units 1 and 2, Geography Units 1 and 2, Sociology Unit 1 and Grade II in Sociology Unit 2.

Brad Bachu of Presentation College, Chaguanas, was the recipient of the award for the Most Outstanding Candidate in Technical Studies. Brad achieved Grade I in 10 Units, all with A’s on the Module grades – Applied Mathematics Units 1 and 2, Caribbean Studies, Communication Studies, Geometrical Engineering Drawing Units 1 and 2, Physics Units 1 and 2 and Pure Mathematics Units 1 and 2. This is the second consecutive year a student from Presentation College, Chaguanas is winning this award.

Two students from Naparima Girls’ High School won awards this year. Sitara Persad won the award for the Most Outstanding Candidate in Mathematics with Grade I in 10 Units, all with A’s on the Module grades. Sitara achieved Grade I in Applied Mathematics Units 1 and 2, Caribbean Studies, Chemistry Units 1 and 2, Communication Studies, Physics Units 1 and 2 and Pure Mathematics Units 1 and 2.

Her colleague, Ann-sara Ramkissoon received the award for the Most Outstanding Candidate in Modern Languages. Ann-sara achieved Grade I in eight Units: Caribbean Studies, Communication Studies, French Units 1 and 2, History Units 1 and 2, and Spanish Units 1 and 2.

Marcus Belasco of Naparima College, took home the award for the Most Outstanding Candidate in Natural Sciences. Marcus achieved Grade I in 10 Units, all with A’s on the Module grades – Biology Units 1 and 2, Caribbean Studies, Chemistry Units 1 and 2, Communication Studies, Physics Units 1 and 2, and Pure Mathematics Units 1 and 2.
Jeanelle Pran of Lakshmi Girls’ Hindu School got the award for the Most Outstanding Candidate in the Humanities with Grade I in seven Units – Caribbean Studies, Communication Studies, History Units 1 and 2, Literatures in English Unit 2 and Sociology Units 1 and 2; and Grade II in Literatures in English Unit 1.
Abraham Dubrisingh of Harrison College, Barbados was the only non-Trinidadian to win a CAPE award this year. Abraham received the award for the Most Outstanding Candidate in Information and Communication Technology. Abraham broke the stronghold of Campion College, Jamaica on this award and also averted a clean sweep by candidates from Trinidad and Tobago. He achieved Grade I in eight Units – Caribbean Studies, Communication Studies, Computer Science Units 1 and 2, Physics Units 1 and 2 and Pure Mathematics Units 1 and 2.

For producing the Most Outstanding Candidate Overall in 2012, St Joseph’s Convent, St. Joseph, Trinidad and Tobago, was presented with the award for the CAPE School of the Year.
