2015 has been a very good year for CXC. During the year members of staff in Barbados were able to move into the new purpose-built Headquarters, which was generously provided by the Government and people of Barbados. On 14 October, the new Headquarters was officially opened with a ceremony involving key stakeholders from Barbados, the region and further afield. The Right Honourable Freundel Stuart, Prime Minister of Barbados delivered the feature address, and along with Chairman, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles unveiled the plaque to officially open the building. Stakeholders representing the entire spectrum of CXC attended the ceremony, which was carried live on television regionally by Caribvision, in Barbados by CBC television, live on radio, by Quality FM and streamed live on the Internet via CXC TV.

In January, CXC embarked on a bold and ambitious plan aimed at achieving the annual targets as they relate to the three strategic objectives: To strengthen our business model through diversification of our examinations and services portfolio, segment profile and geographic markets; To secure financial stability through sustainable revenue growth, increased efficiency and expense management; To deliver an enhanced stakeholder experience through investment in the right people, consistent use of technology and adherence to quality standards.

Significant progress has been made on strategic objective one. During the year there has been expansion of the CAPE offerings, with the first examinations offered in five New Generation CAPE subjects: Agricultural Science, Performing Arts, Physical Education and Sport, Entrepreneurship, and Tourism.

Some progress was also made with expansion into the Dutch Caribbean. A high-level delegation from the Overseas Department Dutch Ministry of Education and representatives from schools in Saba and Sint Eustatius visited Barbados in January to get a better understanding of the CXC examinations system. Members of the delegation also visited schools and spoke with teachers, principals and heads of departments. Based on the visit, a decision has been made for the islands to adopt the CXC examinations system. CXC has started working with the team from the islands to implement some of the CXC offerings.

Progress has also been made in strategic objective two. The investments made in previous years to increase efficiency are beginning to pay dividends and at the same time some of our partnerships are showing modest returns.

The Finance and Office Management team has been enforcing compliance with procurement guidelines and ensuring that the best price is obtained for items of expenditure, as well as reviewing major cost drivers.

With respect to objective three, CXC undertook several stakeholder engagements in 2015. The targeted stakeholders included principals, parents and the private sector. Stakeholder meetings were held with principals and parents in Barbados, Guyana and St Kitts and Nevis, while meetings were held with the private sector in Guyana and St Kitts and Nevis.

We at CXC thank the candidates, teachers, principals, ministry officials, panel members, committee members and all stakeholders for your contribution to this year’s success and promise that with your continued support we shall reach or surpass our objectives for next year.
