Belmont Students get Glimpse in to CXC Operations

PRESS RELEASE

05/02/2020

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Seventeen students from the Belmont Secondary School in Trinidad and Tobago, received an inside glimpse of the workings of the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC®) this past week. The students, who ranged in age between 16 and 18 were on a tour of various educational institutions, based in Barbados.

This is the second such time the school has brought a group of students to learn more about CXC’s work. The students toured each department, speaking to representatives who explained what activities the department carries out and their strategic role in the organisation.

Dr. Carol Granston, Pro-Registrar and Deputy CEO of CXC, explained the value of the activity. “It is important that we demystify how our organisation works and help learners to be more comfortable with the examination experience. We think it is extremely important that our stakeholders understand that CXC was created to serve the people of this region. This year we will be actively engaging with various stakeholder groups to address their specific needs and convey the significance of CXC’s work to assure global human resource competitiveness of the Caribbean.”

Organiser of the visit, Ms Sherma Phillip, Dean of Belmont Secondary shared her thoughts on the visit. “For the past two years we have organised this tour for our senior students to get a better understanding of the institutions which have an impact on their educational journey. CXC has opened their doors to us each time and delivered a very professional tour of their departments. As a result, I know that our students now have a greater appreciation for the work being done at CXC.”

Students learned about examination question selection, e-testing, e-marking and the new Learning Hub online resource, among other things.
