The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) will launch its latest New Generation CAPE subject, Animation and Game Design, on Saturday 12 March 2016 at the KingstOOn Festival in Jamaica.

The launch will take place at 2:00 pm at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, which is hosting KingstOON. During the one-hour event, there will be two live animation demonstrations; one by ListenMi Caribbean and the other by students of Allman Town Primary School.

Dr Carol Granston, CXC’s Pro Registrar will speak about the philosophical underpinnings of the New Generation CAPE subjects; while Ms Margery Newland – Project Manager, Youth Employment in the Digital and Animation Industries Project will speak on behalf of KingstOON.

The new syllabus describes Animation and Game Design as “a course of study that focuses on the process of creating motion and shape change illusion as well as the art of applying design and aesthetics for animation and game development.”

The syllabus had five aims, these are to: develop a fundamental understanding of the principles and practices of animation and game design; foster an appreciation of the value of animation and game design to society; encourage the development of dynamic, creative, and sustainable solutions relevant to economic, educational, cultural and social contexts; engender critical thinking, leadership and management with entrepreneurial skills and competencies necessary for functioning effectively in the current as well as future animation and game design environments; and, facilitate the acquisition of relevant knowledge, skills and competencies through authentic learning experiences, in preparation for a career in the Animation and Games industry.

KingstOOn festival brings together hundreds of professional animators, students and artists from across the Caribbean and around the world to participate in a two-day animation conference and film festival, an initiative of the Government of Jamaica in collaboration with the World Bank and the Caribbean Development Bank. The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) is partnering with KingstOOn to enable students from each parish in Jamaica to attend this year’s festival.

The launch of Animation and Game Design will be streamed live at devcxcedu.wpengine.com/cxctv from 2:00 pm Jamaican time; 3:00 pm in the Eastern Caribbean and 1:00 pm in Belize.
