For the first time, students from Guyana have copped more Regional Top Awards at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) than students from Trinidad and Tobago. This year, students from Guyana copped three of the awards, while students from Trinidad and Tobago won two awards and one student from Jamaica won one award.

The 2017 Regional Top Awards were announced at the meeting of the Sub-Committee of the School Examinations Committee (SUBSEC) meeting held at CXC Headquarters in Barbados on Tuesday 17 October.

The winner of the Dennis Irvine Award is Joel Kissoon of Presentation College, San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago. Joel wrote 16 CAPE Units and achieved Grade I in 14 Units and Grade II in two Units. He achieved Grade I in Applied Mathematics Unit 1, Biology Units 1 and 2, Caribbean Studies, Communications Studies, Chemistry Units 1 and 2, French Units 1 and 2, Physics Units 1 and 2, Pure Mathematics Units 1 and 2, Spanish Unit; and Grade II in Applied Mathematics Units 2 and Spanish Unit 2.

Chela Aufderheide of Naparima Girls’ High School, Trinidad and Tobago takes the Language Studies award with Grade I in 12 Units. Chela achieved Grade I in Caribbean Studies, Communications Studies, French Units 1 and 2, Literatures in English Units 1 and 2, Physics Units 1 and 2, Pure Mathematics Units 1 and 2 and Spanish Units 1 and 2.

Three of the awards go to students from Guyana. Shawn Shewram of St Rose’s High School takes the ACCA/CXC Business Studies Award. Shawn becomes the first recipient of the ACCA-sponsored award. He achieved Grade I in 12 Units: Accounting Units 1 and 2, Caribbean Studies, Communication Studies, Economic Units 1 and 2, Entrepreneurship Unit 1 and 2, Law Units 1 and 2, Management of Business Units 1 and 2; and Grade III in two Units: Integrated Mathematics and Literatures in English Unit 1.

Shannon Woodroffe, of Queen’s College, Guyana, becomes only the second student to win a CSEC award and also a CAPE award, in fact, Shannon has done one better than at CSEC, she has copped two of the CAPE awards this year. Shannon wins both the Mathematics and Natural Science awards in 2017 with Grade I in 13 Units, all with “As” in the Module grades. She achieved Grade I in Applied Mathematics Units 1 and 2, Biology Units 1 and 2, Caribbean Studies, Chemistry Units 1 and 2, Communications Studies, Integrated Mathematics, Physics Units 1 and 2 and Pure Mathematics Units 1 and 2.

Jared Johnson of Campion College, Jamaica is the winner of the Hodder/CXC Humanities Award. He achieved Grade I in nine Units and Grade II in one Unit. Jared achieved Grade I in Caribbean Studies, Communication Studies, History Units 1 and 2, Law Units 1 and 2, Literatures in English Units 1 and 2, Spanish Unit 1 and Grade II in Spanish Unit 1.

As a result of Joel’s accomplishments, Presentation College, San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago is the CAPE School of the Year for 2017.

Awardees will receive their prizes at the Regional Top Awards Ceremony slated for December 14 at the St Kitts Marriott Resort.
