CXC and Nelson Thornes to Launch CAPE and CSEC Study Guides

Candidates preparing for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) and the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) now have additional resources to assist them in their preparations.

The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) and the UK-based publishing house Nelson Thornes will launch 15 study guides at various events across the Caribbean during the week of 18th to 22nd June.

The eight study guides being launched for CSEC are: English A, English B, Information Technology, Integrated Science, Mathematics, Office Administration, Principles of Business and Social Studies; while the seven CAPE study guides are: Accounting Unit 1, Accounting Unit 2, Biology Unit 1, Caribbean Studies, Chemistry Unit 1, Communication Studies and Economics Unit 1.

CXC and Nelson Thornes will launch the guides in Barbados on 18th June at the Savannah Hotel; in St Lucia on Tuesday 19th June at the Bay Gardens Hotel; in Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday 20th June at Crowne Plaza Hotel; and in Jamaica on Friday 22nd June at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.

The event in St Lucia will serve as the launch of the texts for the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and representatives from ministries of education in the OECS have been invited to attend.

Each event will be addressed by Ministry of Education official, CXC representative, a Nelson Thornes’ representative and one of the Caribbean authors involved in writing the guides.

Dr the Honourable Robert Lewis, Minister of Education in St Lucia will deliver the feature address at the launch in St Lucia on Tuesday 19th June. In Trinidad and Tobago, Dr the Honourable Tim Gopeesingh, Minister of Education will deliver the feature address on Wednesday June 20th, while Honourable Reverend Ronald Thwaites, Minister of Education in Jamaica will be the feature speaker at the event on Friday 22nd June.

Among the authors listed to speak at the four events are: Dr Joyce Stewart - Barbados, Ms Ancillia Louis - St Lucia, Ms Denise Hernandez - Trinidad and Tobago and Mr Gerard Phillip - Jamaica.

The study guides come with an interactive CD ROM and each chapter features learning outcomes, key points, examinations tips and activities.

The study guides are the result of a collaborative project between CXC and Nelson Thornes to produce support resources for all CXC subject offerings. The guides are written by a team of educational specialists from the Caribbean and the United Kingdom. They are well-illustrated with photographs and other images which highlight issues from around the Caribbean which students can readily relate to.

“The Council is delighted that this partnership with Nelson Thornes continues to reap success,” stated Dr Didacus Jules, CXC Registrar. “Last year we launched two texts for CCSLC and this year we are launching 15 texts. This is evidence of the hard work of the team of Caribbean and UK writers who have been working on this project.”

“The Study Guides are designed to provide students with extra support and assistance in their preparation for examinations and help them maximise their potential,” explained Peter Maisey, International Marketing Manager for Nelson Thornes. “They have been developed as an additional resource for both use in schools and as an independent learning tool, for candidates studying for CSEC and CAPE qualifications.”

The new study guides are available in bookstores across the Caribbean.
